All of that said, I still believe the Devils are the better team in this series, though they have not played like it for two thirds of the first three games (six of the nine periods). They are a flawed team, but I think they still have enough to come back and win this series—if they can mentally overcome tonight’s loss.

I think Thursday’s Game 4 is their season, If they lose, I don’t see them overcoming a 3-1 series deficit. If they win, they can regain control and their confidence.

In their history, the Devils are 2-9 in series in which they lost Game 3 after splitting the first two games. Their only two victories in this situation were in the 2000 conference finals against Philadelphia and the 2007 conference quarterfinals against Tampa Bay—the last playoff series they won.

This series reminds me a little of that 2007 series in that the Devils are losing to a team they are better than because they are making foolish mistakes. Once they cleaned up those mistakes in 2007—and Brodeur cleaned up his game—they won three straight in that series.
